Done with the glade we had this crazy thought to go herp a spring for Grotto Salamanders. Heavy rain made a terrapin cross the road. This snake is firmly established in a Los Angeles County lake – a USGS project this summer pulled about 200 snakes out of the lake and estimated a population of 1,000-2,000. Some of the “wanderers” out there are actually “mountains”; and now all of the “coasts”, but one are “mountains” as well.

This was just a short trip which didn’t yield much in a way of reptiles but the river looked spectacular. It is perfectly fine to hike around in parks to observe wildlife, including herps. A number of snakes have heat sensing abilities and may become defensive or curious towards warm body parts, such as hands and arms. After this I have to do Costa Rica 2012 and 2013! In autumn, I once found a juvenile Coast Horned Lizard high up in montane chaparral (below right). Our final stop to the north was to join up with some friends in Contra Costa County. My 2 (realistic) target species for the weekend were 1) Santa Cruz Black salamander (Aneides flavipunctatus niger) and 2) Santa Cruz Gartersnake (Thamnophis atratus atratus) so I spent most of Saturday flipping for these two herps to no avail… The Gila Monster lizard is a protected species that is sometimes the target of poachers. Does anyone know of big rig restrictions in San Diego and Imperial counties? My heart dropped out of my chest as I ran over to grab the lizard and hope it was okay. We didn’t spend more than 20 minutes there and flipped two milks. We had a couple of Germans in our group that had never seen one before, and I had to remind them that it was venomous. On my way back to Wilpena Pound from Wilkawillina Gorge, I stopped for a picture of a colorful parrot. deserts. Florida Softshell resting on the bottom of the…pond? The day started nice, finding this spiny softshell rather close to where I found the other a few weeks ago. We could not see the stars overhead; we did not have kangaroos or wallabies grazing nearby; and no chorus of Australian Ravens or Kookaburras woke us up. The former tree had been right at the edge of the path, so I guess you could consider this a form of trail maintenance. A couple of snake eyed skinks and Kotschy’s geckoes showed up as well. We then decided to split the day between that glade and one given to us by Wayne Brekhus that was supposedly good for Ground Snakes. He had a hilariously nonchalant reaction to the threadsnake, and he told me he seems them all the time when there is spring or summer rain. I prayed they’d miss the lizard because it was small and in the middle of the lane. I said to Kyle “you want to pull over and flip if we see more of that at the next exit?” Kyle was all over it. Thankfully I did, as a few moments later I was able to locate the snake in question in the grass – an adult Cottonmouth! The same male in a couple of other poses. And it was only a little bitty lizard, a young Common Desert Ctenotus. In Part 7 I’ll be down in the northern Eyre Peninsula.

Alex was telling me about how he was bitten years ago by a Fer de Lance when he looked down and spotted this Jumping viper (Atropoides nummifer) mostly hidden by dead leaves.

With a little fanagling, I was able to help it shed out to reveal this stunning animal. Below are some random photos of some of my finds this year. It was a great end to the best year of field herping I’ve ever had. They both slowed up to a stop before the snake, and I ran out to grab it before they went on. At this point, I was feeling pretty good about myself because I had seen half a dozen lizards in the last hour and maybe it was that time of day. Producing another ten or so milk snakes, even after hours when the lot of us were shivering in the cool night air. I wasn’t able to get a good shot of the FL Watersnake mentioned above, but we saw another live one that night. This was a plain-sight version of the dragon I had glimpsed earlier. Later I hiked the base walk all the way around Uluru, a little more than six miles.

It was initially basking in the road, but soon crawled into the nearby scrub. that sucks … The long legs and consistent rough texture identified it as a different Bufonid. I found more of these, young as well as old, over the course of the morning. However this may have been 99% peer pressure from me and his dad. The most widespread and common is the Desert Tree Frog, although Cogger among others thinks this is a species complex just waiting to be studied and split. Some Ctenophorus species are known as “rock dragons”, and rule over rocky outcrops like collared lizards.

Of course I didn’t have my camera ready and it was full of Turkish geckos Hemidactylus turcicus which quickly disappeared. It was early, so we had high hopes. We saw 5 or 6 specimens, male and female, climbing like monkeys… They are taking this seriously! This involved exploring around Newcastle and some of the reserves in the area as well as Sydney. I moved the animal off of the road and snapped a few photos as the external damage was very minor. Nothing but copperheads and rat snakes. A large chunk of the pinelands had recently been burned by an accidental fire, as you can see in some of the photos below. I believe this is another Eastern Striped Skink. The Lasseter Highway was a much more productive herping environment as it turned out. The second and third pictures are from further south on the island though. Here’s a larger treefrog that I did see at both locations.

Asides from the plentiful crabs, naked man orchids, a few marsh frogs, and the omnipresent Balkan green and Peloponnese wall lizards, these surroundings had a healthy population of another of my target species, the Greek rock lizard, Hellenolacerta graeca. It just amazed me that so many species could been seen by a nearly sedentary person. While I was wandering over the rocks in the gorge looking for frogs to photograph, I noticed something else that was probably out looking for frogs. And because it humored me when I found the Carpet Python in Queensland, my Fitbit also managed to capture when I saw the Perentie and when I saw the Devil. (In Amazonia, on foot, five snakes in a night is a serious haul, and seven is fantastic.) You would think you could just shoot another frame with the moon correctly exposed and then blend the two together like I did with the Milky Way herp shots this summer, but the problem is that the overexposed moon is always bigger than the correctly exposed one because the overexposure does not only include the moon, but a glowing halo of light around the moon. After that, it was time for another cozy campfire evening. By the time we saw the sun peaked over the horizon for the second time we were on our way back to the lodge to get a few hours of sleep before making the drive to Sanderson for our last two nights in Texas.
